FACT #1: Bachata started in the Dominican republic as “the poor people’s music” in the 1960s and 1970s.  Bachata was mostly played in brothels and bars because it was regarded as 'low class'.

FACT #2: José Manuel Calderón recorded the first Bachata single 1962, called "Borracho de Amor".

FACT #3: Bachata music was held as a lower form of art by the dictator Rafael Trujillo. But because it was offensive and vulgar to him...Trujillo banned Bachata in certain places of the Dominican Republic.

FACT #4: After Trujillo’s dictatorship ended, people slowly changed their perception of Bachata... Mostly because the music genre was being refined in the 1980s and 1990s.

FACT #5: Nostalgic Dominican migrants brought Bachata to New York, because they longed to stay connected to their Dominican roots. Above all, Bachata received a new-found popularity, like never-before seen.

FACT #6: New York provided a place for second generation Dominicans to rebuild this genre into what is now called “Urban Bachata”. Subsequently, Bachata slowly changed and fused with influences of R&B, hip-hop, English and Spanish. In contrast to its original form, Bachata had now more positive love lyrics and a less emotional singing style.

FACT #7: In the past years, Bachata gained a lot of popularity, as talented artists emerged like Aventura, Prince Royce, Romeo Santos. As these reinvented the music, dancers made Bachata into one of the most sensual and romantic latin dances!
