About this course

6 step formula

​LEADERS​

  • Basic step

This is the most important step! Make sure you practice this over and over until you feel comfortable and you no longer have to think about it. Start slow first and then develop speed. Pay attention to how we step, and the size of the steps.   How to remember the basic step:

Together (1), forward (2), in place (3).... Together (5), back (6), in place (7)

Quick (1), quick (2), slow (3)… Quick (5), quick (6), slow (7)…

1,2,3, pause (4), 5,6,7, pause (8)

1,2,3… 5,6,7…

Middle, forward, middle… middle, back, middle

Key Points:

Go back on 2 with the right foot, go forward on count 6 with left foot

  • Right Turn:

Key Points:

The turn is not immediate...

The hand goes up on 1, then turn your partner on 2, 3.

The follower is turning to your left.

How to remember:

Raise the hand (1), turn (2), turn (3)... lower the hand (5), 6, 7

  • Left Turn:

Key Points:

The turn is immediate...

The hand goes up by 3 (you start to lift it after 2)

The follower is turning to your right.

How to remember:

1 , after 2 start to raise, turn (3)... 5, 6, 7

  • Cross Body Lead:

Key Points:

Start to open up slightly on 7

Open up completely on 1

Pull forward on 1

The hand stays parallel to the floor (it doesn’t go up)

How to remember:

1, 2, 3… 5, 6, 7 (start to open)

Pull (1), pull (2), 3… 5,6,7...

Tips:

Think of opening up your left shoulder like a door, to let your partner through…

Once your partner is on the other side, close the door.

  • Walk Through:

Key Points:

The same footwork as the cross body lead

The hand goes up and pulls forward on 1

The followers turns to their right (away from you), underneath your arm.

How to remember:

1, 2, 3… 5, 6, 7 (start to open)

Raise the hand and Pull (1), pull (2), pull (3)… 5,6,7...

Tips:

Put the emphasis on pulling forward (not on turning partner, or pulling your partner back)

  • Left Travel Turn:

Key Points:

The same footwork as the cross body lead

The hand stays parallel to the floor (low) on 1,2, and goes up and turns your partner on 3

The followers turns to their left (towards you), underneath your arm.

How to remember:

1, 2, 3… 5, 6, 7 (start to open)

Pull (1), pull (2), Raise the hand, and turn your partner (3)… 5,6,7...

Tips:

1 circle above your partner.

Keep the circle small

  • Right Travel Turn:

Key Points:

The same footwork as the cross body lead

The hand starts the turn immediately on 1

The followers turns to their left (towards you), underneath your arm.

How to remember:

1, 2, 3… 5, 6, 7 (start to open)

Raise the hand, and turn your partner (1), Turn (2), finish the turn (3)… 5,6,7...

Tips:

2 circles above your partner.

  • Basic step

  • Right Turn:

The turn is not immediate...

Go forward on 2, then turn on 3.

When you land… that’s 5.

How to remember:

Tip:

The turn is slow (it takes 2 counts to complete the turn: 3, 4)

  • Left Turn:

Key Points:

The turn is not immediate...

Go forward on 2, then turn on 3.

Land back on 6, stay in place on 7

How to remember:

Together (1), forward (2), Turn (3).... Tturn (5), back (6), in place (7)

Tip:

The turn happens going backwards.

  • Cross Body Lead:

Key Points:

Walk forward two steps, then turn to your left, half a turn

How to remember:

Walk (1), Walk (2), Turn around (3)... Together (5), back (6), in place (7) Tip:

Take small steps

  • Walk Through:

Key Points:

Walk forward three steps, then turn to your right, half a turn

How to remember:

Walk (1), Walk (2), walk (3) turn... Together (5), back (6), in place (7) Tip:

Take small steps

  • Left Travel Turn:

Key Points:

Walk forward two steps, then turn to your left, one and a half turns

How to remember:

Walk (1), Walk (2), turn (3)... Turn (5), back (6), in place (7)

  • Right Travel Turn:

Key Points:

Turn immediately to your right, one and a half turns

How to remember:

Turn (1), Turn (2), turn (3)... together (5), back (6), in place (7)
